Identifying Common Household Pests

Pest Authority employs a thorough process by undergoing an inspection to identify and treat your property for a variety of common household pests. When you reach out to us, we’ll ask you questions about your home or business and the vermin causing your vexation before setting up an appointment to assess your situation and determine the best course of action.

Some of the most common household pests we handle include the following:

  • Carpet beetles. In the US, there are a few varieties of carpet beetles that can plague your property: black carpet, varied carpet, and common carpet beetles. While they aren’t dangerous to humans, they can cause damage to carpets, rugs, felt, animal hair, silk, and wool. A good indicator of a carpet beetle infestation is noticeable damage to your rugs, carpets, clothing, furniture, or drapes.
  • Centipedes. Like their outdoor counterparts, house centipedes have between 15 and 177 pairs of legs. These pests are venomous and can cause mild to moderate irritation to humans in the rare event that they do bite. Centipedes are attracted to damp areas such as basements, closets, bathrooms, bathtubs, and sinks.
  • Crickets. Crickets prefer to live outside but will move indoors when outdoor conditions become too hot or dry. These insects are easily identifiable by their chirping noise and ability to jump long distances. Although harmless to humans, their noise and capacity for damaging clothing and other fabrics can make them an unwanted nuisance.
  • Earwigs. Also known as “pinching bugs,” earwigs are known for the protruding pincers on their abdomen. They may look menacing, but earwigs are not dangerous to humans, as their biggest offense is producing a foul-smelling liquid as a defense mechanism. Earwigs prefer wet, undisturbed habitats like basements and crawl spaces where they can eat decaying vegetation, fungi, sprouts, seedlings, other insects, and human food.
  • Ground beetles. Ground beetles are flat and black with elongated abdomens and can range in size. These pests aren’t harmful to humans, often entering homes through gaps in the foundation, doors, and windows.
  • Millipedes. Like centipedes, millipedes also prefer damp areas. They’re most often found in mulch, leaf piles, grass clippings, sheds, basements, under porches and patios, and in crawl spaces. While they aren’t harmful to humans, they can move in large numbers, thus becoming a significant nuisance if left unchecked.
  • Moths. Most house moths are small and are often a variety of shades of brown or grey. Clothes moths are one of the most common types of moths, infesting clothing and upholstery and leaving holes and feces stains on fabric. Pantry moths are another common type, feeding on dry goods like flour, spices, grains, and nuts hidden in cupboards and pantries.
  • Pill bugs. Did you know that pill bugs are more closely related to shrimp and crayfish than insects? As the only crustaceans that have adapted to living on land successfully, pill bugs are oval-shaped with segmented bodies in varying shades of grey and prefer high-moisture areas like basements, crawl spaces, and the ground floor of buildings. Most people refer to these bugs as “roly-polies,” as they roll up into a tight ball when threatened or disturbed.
  • Silverfish. Silverfish are silver or grey and have flat, hard bodies with long antennae. These insects are nocturnal, move incredibly fast, and are highly sensitive to light, making them difficult to catch if you find them in your bathroom, laundry room, basement, or crawl space. In addition to their speed, silverfish eat just about anything and can go for weeks without food or water.
